Staphylococcus aureus in tonsils of patients with recurrent tonsillitis: prevalence, susceptibility profile, and genotypic characterization BJID
Cavalcanti,Veraluce Paolini; Camargo,Leandro Azevedo de; Moura,Fabiano Santana; Melo Fernandes,Edson Júnior de; Lamaro-Cardoso,Juliana; Braga,Carla Afonso da Silva Bitencourt; André,Maria Cláudia Porfirio.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Bacterial tonsillitis is an upper respiratory tract infection that occurs primarily in children and adolescents. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most frequent pathogens in the etiology of tonsillitis and its relevance is due to its antimicrobial resistance and persistence in the internal tissues of the tonsils. Tonsillectomy is indicated in cases of recurrent tonsillitis after several failures of antibiotic therapy. Material and methods: In this study we evaluated 123 surgically removed tonsils from patients who had history of recurrent tonsillitis. The tonsils were submitted to microbiological analysis for detection of S. aureus. The isolates were identified by PCR for femA gene. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates...

Staphylococcus aureus regulates secretion of interleukin-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 through activation of nuclear factor kappaB signaling pathway in human osteoblasts BJID
Ning,Rende; Zhang,Xianlong; Guo,Xiaokui; Li,Qingtian.
OBJECTIVE: Activation of nuclear factor kappaB by diverse bacteria regulates the secretion of chemokines and cytokines. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-infected osteoblasts can significantly increase the secretion of interleukin-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. The aim of this study was to investigate whether S. aureus can activate nuclear factor kappaB in human osteoblasts, and whether the activation of nuclear factor kappaB by S. aureus regulates the secretion of interleukin-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. METHODS: Immunoblot and electrophoretic mobility shift assay were used to detect the degradation of IκBa and activation of nuclear factor kappaB in human osteoblasts in response to S. aureus, respectively. Enzyme-linked...

Success stories about severe pneumonia caused by Panton-Valentine leucocidin-producing Staphylococcus aureus BJID
Elisabeth,Paramythiotou; Maria,Souli; Irene,Galani; Helen,Giamarellou; Apostolos,Armaganidis.
We describe three cases of community-acquired necrotizing pneumonia which were caused by Panton-Valentine leucocidin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus (one of them methicillin sensitive). All cases were successfully treated without any sequelae for the patients due to the prompt initiation of adequate antimicrobial therapy. High suspicion toward this fatal pathogen was the key to the successful outcome of the patients.

Temporal evolution of the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a tertiary hospital in Bahia, Brazil: a nine-year evaluation study BJID
Brites,Carlos; Silva,Nanci; Sampaio- Sá,Márcia.
Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have become an increasing problem in Brazilian hospitals within the last years. In Bahia, there is scarce information on the epidemiological characteristics of MRSA infections and their determinants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the temporal evolution of MRSA infections in a private, tertiary hospital, in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia. We reviewed the microbiological records of bacterial isolates from the Hospital Espanhol, a 300 bed, general hospital, in Salvador. We analyzed the frequency of positive cultures for S. aureus during the last nine years, the prevalence of MRSA, and the spatial distribution of the isolates in the hospital. We also evaluated...

The carriage of the serine-aspartate repeat protein-encodingsdr genes among Staphylococcus aureuslineages BJID
Liu,Huanle; Lv,Jingnan; Qi,Xiuqin; Ding,Yu; Li,Dan; Hu,Longhua; Wang,Liangxing; Yu,Fangyou.
ABSTRACTThe serine-aspartate repeat proteins (Sdr) are members of a family of surface proteins and contribute to the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus. Among 288 S. aureus isolates including 158 and 130 associated with skin and soft tissue infections and bloodstream infection, respectively; 275 (95.5%) were positive for at least one of threesdr genes tested. The positivity rates for sdrC, sdrD, and sdrE among S. aureusisolates were 87.8% (253/288), 63.9% (184/288), and 68.1% (196/288), respectively. 224 (77.8%) of 288 isolates were concomitantly positive for two or three sdr genes. There was an association between carriage ofsdrE and methicillin-resistant S. aureus(MRSA) isolates, while the carriage rates of sdrC andsdrD in MRSA isolates were similar...

Type IV SCCmec found in decade old Brazilian MRSA isolates BJID
Reinert,Cristina; McCulloch,John Anthony; Watanabe,Shinya; Ito,Teruyo; Hiramatsu,Keiichi; Mamizuka,Elsa Masae.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) commonly causes infection in hospitalized patients. Since its appearance in the 1960s, the SCCmec has evolved throughout the years into 5 different types (I-V), each bearing a different set of genes. Infection with MRSA SCCmec types I, II or III is almost exclusively restricted to hospitalised patients. However, recently, community acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) infections have been reported with increasing frequency, usually caused by a type IV SCCmec MRSA in nosocomial settings. We studied the prevalence of SCCmec types in 50 nosocomial strains collected from 1995 to 1999. The SCCmec complex type and presence of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) were determined by PCR. Strains had been previously typed by PFGE...

Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Seridan,B.; Souza,M.R.; Nicoli,J.R.; Carmo,L.S.; Menezes,L.D.M.; Oliveira,D.L.S.; Andrade,E.H.P..
